About This Event
Tour des Stations is arguably Switzerland’s greatest cycling event, and one of the most demanding and visually spectacular fondos in all of Europe, yet somehow still flying under the radar compared to the Marmotte or the Maratona. That gap in reputation is the sport’s loss. This is high Alpine riding at its most raw and rewarding, threading through sixteen mountain resorts across the Valais on roads that most cyclists will never otherwise see, with the kind of sustained vertical that stops conversations.
The concept is simple and brutal: climb the equivalent of Everest in a single day on your bike. That means 8,848 meters of elevation gain across 241 kilometers for those taking on the flagship Ultrafondo, which rolls out of Le Chable at 2:30 AM under headlamps and starlight. The darkness at the start is not a gimmick. It is a necessity. Major climbs include Thyon 2000 and the Col du Lein, and the route finishes high above Verbier at the Col de la Croix-de-Coeur, where the views across the Swiss and French Alps reward everything the legs have been through.
Three shorter distances make the event accessible without diluting the experience. The Superfondo covers 185 kilometers with 6,800 meters of climbing. The Marmotte Granfondo Valais offers 133 kilometers and 4,700 meters. The Mediofondo is the entry point at 74 kilometers and 2,900 meters of gain. All routes share the same start in Le Chable and the same finish above Verbier.
The event draws around 3,500 riders across its editions, with participants arriving from 50 countries. For an event this demanding and this beautiful, that number still feels like a well-kept secret.
The event runs across two days. Friday, August 28 features bib pickup from 10:00 to 20:00 in Verbier at Place de l’Ermitage, and a children’s criterium (the Bambinofondo) takes place that same afternoon. Late bib collection is available Saturday, August 29 from 04:00 to 08:30 at Le Chable (Espace Saint-Marc).
