Xterra Sugarloaf 2026
About This Event
Set within the dramatic terrain of Sugarloaf Mountain in Carrabassett Valley, Maine, this trail running event delivers one of the most technically challenging courses in the Northeast. The race utilizes more than 60 miles of mountain trails that wind through dense forests, over rocky outcroppings, and along exposed ridgelines, with elevation spanning from 1,417 feet at the base to 4,237 feet at the summit.
The marathon distance covers 42 kilometers with over 1,300 meters of climbing, featuring a demanding opening ascent that sets the tone for the entire race. Runners navigate single-track trails riddled with Maine’s signature roots and rocks, steep technical sections, and flowing woodland passages that reward skilled trail runners. The half-marathon offers similar terrain challenges with roughly half the elevation gain, while the 10-12km distance provides a more accessible introduction to Sugarloaf’s rugged character.
As a former host of the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship, the event maintains its reputation for attracting elite athletes while remaining welcoming to recreational runners. The fall timing transforms the mountain into a showcase of New England foliage, with vibrant colors framing the challenging climbs and technical descents.
The race atmosphere balances serious competition with the inclusive spirit typical of XTERRA events. Aid stations are strategically placed throughout the challenging terrain, and the mountain resort setting provides a festival-like base camp atmosphere. Participants consistently praise the course’s technical variety and the stunning ridge-top views that reward the significant climbing effort required throughout the race.
