Mudslinger Events presents West Coast Gravl as the second leg of the 11th Anniversary of the Oregon Triple Crown Series. The first leg, the Oregon Coast Gravel Epic takes place the day prior with a start only a short distance away, making for an epic gravel weekend opportunity if you are game for two challenging back-to-back events. Strambecco consistently rates West Coast Gravl as one of the Best Gravel Cycling Race Events in Oregon and one of the Best Gravel Cycling Race Events in the Northwest region.

Event & Course Info
Celebrate the explorer in all of us and join gravel enthusiasts in Yachats, OR, to participate in either a Long Course or a Short Course at West Coast Gravl. The Long Course, Erik the Red Loop, is 57 miles and covers 6700 feet in elevation, which includes a ride along the Yachats River Road and a tricky 3-mile descent to the finish. The Short Course, Leif Erikson route, is ~33 miles with ~3500 feet of climbing. The terrain for the West Coast Gravl course is new and has not seen many bikes. Note there are aid stations along the way.
Both courses start at the Commons area, and riders can choose to change from Long Course to Short Course at Aid Station 1, where the course splits. NOTE: Due to a landslide affecting the original mass start loop, the 2024 event will feature a self-departure setup, starting from Yachats after 9:00 am. Participants must leave by 9:30 am, with the landslide repairs scheduled for summer 2024. Timing will begin 3.7 miles from Yachats and conclude 1 mile from the starting point.
West Coast Gravl is supported by fully stocked aid stations offering water, Hammer Nutrition Heed, and snacks such as PB&J, cookies, pretzels, and pickles. Support and aid are readily available, with the first aid station at 16 miles for both routes, and a second aid station at 18.5 miles for the short route or 38 miles for the long route. Mechanical support is available both at the venue and at the first aid station, and a drop bag service is also offered for personal items. Custom awards will be given out, including top three awards for all distances and a top team award for the best team time on the long course.

Where to Stay in Yachats
Although many riders from the Triple Crown Series will stay in Waldport, OR for the weekend since it is close to both rides, there are also many places to stay in Yachats. Host accommodations include at Overleaf Lodge and Spa as well as the dog-friendly Fireside Motel while other options include The Adobe Resort, The Drift Inn, or Beachcomber Cottages. If you prefer to have a more home-like experience while in town for the race, there are many unique options from art houses to cozy gems. For those who appreciate the simplicity of sleeping under the stars, the KOA Waldport, McKinnley’s RV Park, and Alsea River Marina are convenient options in addition to unique one-of-a-kind camping locations.

The “Gem of the Oregon Coast”, Yachats is a small community that boasts a charming and diverse culinary scene, offering a variety of dining options that emphasize fresh, local ingredients, including seafood caught straight from the Pacific. The town features cozy cafes, upscale eateries, and eclectic bistros, each providing unique flavors and picturesque ocean views. Local favorites include Ona Restaurant & Lounge for fine dining, Luna Sea Fish House, Beach Street Kitchen for or casual dining, and a cup of joe at Village Bean.
Outdoor Activities in Yachats
Yachats, Oregon, with its rugged coastline and lush forested landscapes, serves as a perfect playground for outdoor enthusiasts. In May, when the weather begins to warm and the natural world comes alive, athletes can find a range of activities to engage their adventurous spirits.
For trail runners seeking a challenging yet scenic route, the Amanda Trail offers a rewarding experience. This 3.5-mile trail connects Yachats to the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and features steep climbs and descents through dense, verdant forests. The trail is named in honor of a Native American woman, Amanda, and includes a statue commemorating her story. Runners are treated to stunning views of the coastline and the surrounding wilderness, making it a fulfilling run both physically and spiritually.
Sea kayaking along the Yachats coastline is an exhilarating way to explore the area’s natural beauty. May provides calmer waters and an excellent opportunity to paddle near the shoreline, exploring rocky inlets and hidden coves. Kayakers can often spot marine wildlife, including seals, sea lions, and various seabirds. Local outfitters offer rentals and guided tours, ensuring that both beginners and experienced kayakers can safely enjoy the experience.
Mountain bikers looking for a thrill will find it in the Cummins Creek Wilderness, just south of Yachats. This area features a mix of challenging terrain and beautiful landscapes, perfect for an adrenaline-pumping ride. The Cummins Creek Loop, in particular, is a favorite among bikers, offering a combination of tight turns, steep ascents, and exhilarating descents. The trail is surrounded by a dense canopy of trees, providing a cool, shaded environment that enhances the riding experience.

Mudslinger Events is producing this event in cooperation with the communities of Waldport and Yachats on the central Oregon Coast and with the support of The Peoples Coast. The company was formed by Michael Ripley, an enthusiastic mountain biker who grew up in Eugene, Oregon. The organization brings people together to explore the gorgeous outdoor areas of Oregon. West Coast Gravel is part of the Triple Crown Series, which includes several events from April to July: Oregon Coast Gravel Epic, West Coast Gravel, Oregon Gran Fondo, Sasquatch Duro, and Takelma Gravel Grinder. People interested in participating can register for each event separately or benefit from the OTC Series Pass, which includes price discounts, bike accessories, and prizes associated with the timed-event awards. Strambecco rates many of these events as the Best Gravel Events in the Northwest and the Best Gravel Event in Oregon.
Mudslinger also produces the Oregon XC Series, six premier Oregon MTB events spanning April to September. The Oregon XC Series includes Mudslinger XC, Sisters Stampede, Oregon 24/12, High Cascades 100, and Ring of Fire.
