Boone Gran Fondo 2026
About This Event
The Boone Gran Fondo delivers one of the more challenging courses in the Gran Fondo National Series, set against the backdrop of North Carolina’s High Country. Held in early August when temperatures hover around 80 degrees—a welcome relief from the high 90s plaguing the rest of the East Coast—this event attracts a smaller, more intimate field than other GFNS races.
The course starts at Appalachian State University and immediately tests riders with a climb beside Winklers Creek. What makes Boone particularly demanding isn’t the length of individual climbs, but the relentless nature of the terrain—short, punchy ascents with little recovery time on the descents. The route winds through Shull’s Mill road, crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway, and tackles the roller coaster-like Highway 221 before heading through Linville and the North Toe River Valley. The signature challenge comes with the ascent up Beech Mountain, followed by climbs to the Tennessee State Line and back through Sugar Grove and Valle Crucis.
Three route options cater to different ambitions: the Gran covers 94 miles with 8,437 feet of climbing and four timed segments, the Medio spans 58 miles with 5,363 feet of elevation and three timed segments, and the Piccolo offers 24 miles with 2,366 feet of climbing. Aid stations are positioned strategically throughout each route.
The event maintains GFNS’s signature timed-segment format, where only specific course sections count toward results rather than overall time. The smaller field creates a supportive, family-like atmosphere that participants consistently praise, enhanced by the post-ride gathering featuring local food and craft beer from Rammstein Brewing.
