The Appalachian Journey 2026
About This Event
The Appalachian Journey operates as a duo event modeled after mountain bike stage races like the Cape Epic, emphasizing partnership and teamwork over individual competition. You and your partner ride side by side, assisting each other in non-mechanical ways to tackle Floyd County’s challenging terrain together. This format creates a unique dynamic where communication and mutual support become as important as fitness and bike handling skills.
Set in Floyd County, Virginia—one of the least populated and highest mountain plateaus east of the Mississippi—the event explores dirt, primitive, and gravel roads through ancient Appalachian terrain. The county sits on the Eastern Continental Divide, providing dramatic elevation changes and sweeping vistas across some of America’s oldest mountains.
Three distance options cater to different ambitions, each averaging around 100 feet of elevation gain per mile. The Short Journey covers 36.4 miles with 3,409 feet of climbing over smooth dirt roads with breathtaking views. The Middle Journey extends to 65 miles and 6,709 feet of climbing, reaching the Eastern Continental Divide. The Long Doggie pushes teams through 110 miles and 11,472 feet of elevation gain across the wild Floyd Plateau and Indian Valley, venturing into terrain typically known only to locals.
This year’s routes explore fresh ground towards Rocky Knob and Buffalo Mountain, ensuring new challenges even for returning participants. The event hub at Floyd Family Campground provides convenient amenities, while packet pickup at the Floyd Co Jamboree offers participants an authentic Bluegrass cultural experience.
Aid stations and medical support cover every route, with options to drop to shorter distances while still receiving official finishing times in the non-competitive category.
