About This Event

Last updated June 7, 2026

Event for 2027 has not been confirmed yet… The fifth-oldest ultra race in North America winds 95% on trail through the lush 5,000-acre Mohican Memorial State Forest. As the opening leg of the Midwest Grand Slam of Ultrarunning, Mohican has built a reputation that extends far beyond Ohio—it’s a Western States 100 qualifier and UTMB World Series event that attracts both seasoned ultrarunners and those testing longer distances through the 50-mile and marathon options.

The course’s rolling terrain through dense woodlands offers a challenging but achievable introduction to ultra distance running. What sets Mohican apart isn’t technical difficulty but the legendary volunteer support that has become the event’s calling card. Runners consistently praise the personal attention and care provided at aid stations throughout the forest.

The event carries notable ultrarunning history—Caballo Blanco from “Born to Run” completed the 50-miler as one of his final races. This connection to the sport’s storytelling tradition adds weight to an already prestigious field that includes both competitive athletes chasing qualifying times and recreational runners drawn by the supportive atmosphere.

The late spring timing in Ohio’s Mohican region provides ideal running conditions as the forest comes alive with new growth. The intimate scale of host town Loudonville creates a community feel where runners become part of the local fabric during race weekend.

For those building toward longer ultra distances or seeking a well-supported introduction to trail running beyond the marathon, Mohican delivers both challenge and encouragement in equal measure.

Strambecco profiles events that are Western States 100 Qualifier events.   The Western States Endurance Run, known commonly as the Western States 100, is a 100.2-mile (161 km) ultramarathon in  California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains trails yearly on the last full weekend of June. The race starts at the base of the Olympic Valley ski resort and finishes in Auburn, California. The terrain is quite rugged, frequently showcasing snow on the highest passes and record-hot temperatures throughout the course.  Runners ascend a cumulative total of 18,090 feet (5500 m) and descend a total of 22,970 feet (7000 m) on mountain trails before reaching the finish. Because of the length, the race commences at 5 a.m. and continues through the day and into the night. Runners finishing before the 30-hour time limit for the race receive a commemorative bronze belt buckle, while runners finishing in under 24 hours receive a silver belt buckle.

The Western States 100 is one of the five 100-mile races comprising the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning, including the Old Dominion 100Vermont 100 Mile Endurance Run, and the Wasatch Front 100 Mile Endurance Run in Utah and the Leadville Trail 100 in Colorado.

The Western States Board of Trustees has instituted rules around the overall lottery and selection process, which you can see here.
