In the early 2000s, a group of cyclists in Tuscany began to explore the region’s unpaved roads and paths, and they found that they were perfect for adventure cycling. This group started organizing events and races, soon becoming popular among Italian cyclists.

In 2014, the Strade Bianche, a one-day race that includes a significant portion of gravel roads, was added to the UCI World Tour calendar, further popularizing gravel cycling in Italy. The race has since become a significant event in the Italian cycling calendar, attracting top professional riders worldwide.
