The inaugural Gran Fondo New York GFNY New York City race was held in 2011, and since then, GFNY has expanded to a GFNY Global Series of 30+ events. GFNY bills itself as the largest global cycling marathon brand, and the GFNY New York City serves as the GFNY World Championship every May.  The race features the most international peloton in the world, with riders from almost 100 nations coming together from all corners to challenge themselves against the clock and fellow riders over the iconic route - as you might expect, this is a big event in NYC.  5,000+ riders lining up on a carless George Washington bridge is quite a novelty.   Chosen as one of the Best Road Cycling Race Events in the Mid-Atlantic and one of the Best Cycling Race Events in New York by the Strambecco staff.

Below, you will find information on course details, lodging, dining, and other outdoor activities to do while in town for GFNY New York City.

Event & Course Info

GFNY New York City is one of the best and most unique cycling gran fondos in the U.S., with a start at the George Washington Bridge. Fear not, though; this isn’t a city ride. The route offers some of the best riding terrain in the region, hugging the New Jersey side of the Hudson River North, crossing the NY state line to Bear Mountain State Park, the summit of Bear Mountain, and reversing course through a very hilly section of New Jersey.  The main Gran Fondo route is 100 miles with +8500 feet of elevation gain.  There is also a Medio route at 50 miles with +3500 feet of elevation gain.

GFNY is a race and personal challenge. Every rider gets chip timed from start to finish regardless if they compete for the win, to set a personal best, or to complete the event.  Regardless of ability, talent, level, or placement in the start corrals, all riders can expect to be treated like a Pro For A Day.  The entire racecourse is police-monitored for the start-to-finish chip timing of all riders.  The course has friendly volunteers and fully stocked aid stations to keep you fueled.  The race staff ensures that, whatever your pace is, you will receive the same support and treatment for your entire race. To help you best prepare for race day, GFNY has a dedicated coaching staff available for private coaching, as well as a partnership with TrainingPeaks, to bring you GFNY New York City-specific training programs.

Outdoor Activities around NYC

New York City, often pictured as a sprawling urban landscape, surprisingly offers a plethora of activities for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly as the city bursts into the full bloom of spring in May. Central Park is an oasis for runners and one of the most iconic running spots in the world. Covering over 843 acres, the park offers a variety of scenic routes, including the famous Reservoir running track, a 1.58-mile loop that is favored for its soft surface and stunning skyline views. With the trees in full leaf and flowers in bloom, May is an ideal time for marathon trainers or casual joggers to enjoy the park's natural beauty and challenging landscapes.

For water sports enthusiasts, kayaking on the Hudson River provides a unique perspective of New York City. Several organizations along the river offer kayak rentals and guided tours, allowing both beginners and seasoned paddlers to navigate the calm waters with the city skyline as their backdrop. This activity not only offers a great physical workout but also a moment of tranquility away from the urban rush.

Just a couple of hours' drive from New York City, the Catskill Mountains are a haven for mountain bikers. The region features trails of varying difficulty, from smooth forest paths to challenging rocky terrains. In May, the weather is usually mild, and the natural trails are alive with spring greenery, making it an exhilarating escape for those looking to test their endurance and enjoy some fresh mountain air.
