Gran Fondo Hincapie – Lehigh Valley 2026
About This Event
The Hincapie Gran Fondo Lehigh Valley delivers a distinctly challenging cycling experience through Pennsylvania’s rolling countryside, featuring an unusual mix of paved roads and gravel sectors that sets it apart from typical gran fondos. Created by former Tour de France veteran George Hincapie, who competed in the Tour 17 times and won three US National Road Race championships, this event maintains the high production standards of the Hincapie Gran Fondo Series.
The signature Gran Fondo route covers 78 miles with 5,700 feet of elevation gain, incorporating 11 short, steep climbs and six dirt road sections totaling 5.1 miles. The course winds through picturesque farmland and passes five covered bridges, creating a uniquely scenic Pennsylvania experience. The Medio Fondo offers a 52-mile alternative with 3,700 feet of climbing, eight climbs, and four miles of dirt roads, while the 14-mile Piccolo Fondo provides an accessible option with 800 feet of elevation.
What makes this event memorable is the blend of technical challenges and rural beauty. The dirt road sections add a tactical element rarely found in road events, requiring riders to manage different surfaces while maintaining pace. The short, punchy climbs reward explosive power more than sustained climbing ability.
The event atmosphere balances competitive spirit with community celebration. Well-stocked aid stations provide food, drinks, and mechanical support throughout the course. The post-ride festivities in historic Emmaus feature local food, craft beer, and live music. George Hincapie often appears at events in the series, adding authentic pro cycling credibility to the experience.
