About This Event

Set against the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia, this YMCA-hosted cycling event offers five challenging distances ranging from a 27-mile tour to a grueling 100-mile century ride. The event draws up to 1,000 riders annually, so early registration is essential.

The crown jewel is the 100-mile route, which starts gently on flats and rollers before building to serious challenges. The signature feature is a brutal 13-mile climb to Thunder Ridge, the highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. After a fast descent to Peaks of Otter, riders face the notorious “4 Hills of Otterville” before tackling two final climbs known as The Sausage Grinder and Nemesis.

The 75-mile route shares most of the century course, including the Thunder Ridge ascent, but splits off at mile 62 for a more manageable finish. The 45-mile option balances rolling hills with recovery sections on scenic back roads, while the 27-mile tour provides an accessible introduction to the area’s terrain with just one rest stop.

Course support is comprehensive across all distances, with well-marked roads, fully stocked aid stations, and mechanical support. The route markings are particularly praised by returning participants for their visibility and accuracy.

Post-ride amenities set this event apart from typical cycling events. Participants can access YMCA facilities including showers, a pool, and hot tub – a luxury rarely found at cycling events. The finish area features substantial food offerings and a community atmosphere that reflects the event’s fundraising mission for the YMCA’s Community Support Campaign.
