The Appalachian Mountaineer 2026
About This Event
The Appalachian Mountaineer showcases Virginia’s distinctive dirt roads through challenging climbs and ridgeline exposure on Bald Knob. This November gravel event offers four distance options: the flagship Mountaineer 85 with over 7,800 feet of climbing, the Mid 65 (6,700 feet), Runaround 40 (4,400 feet), and Shortcake 22 (nearly 2,700 feet). Each route features terrain unique to Virginia’s Appalachians, with narrow forest roads, old rail beds, and sustained climbs that test both fitness and bike handling skills.
The bike choice debate runs deep here. Gravel bikes with 38c or larger tires offer efficiency on the long climbs and descents, while hardtail mountain bikes provide extra comfort on the rougher sections. The terrain sits right at that sweet spot where either works, depending on your priorities for speed versus comfort.
Three well-stocked aid stations provide fuel and mechanical support, with teams from Cardinal Bicycle and Star City Cycling ensuring riders stay rolling. November weather above 4,000 feet demands layers, as temperatures can drop significantly on the exposed ridgeline sections.
The post-ride atmosphere centers around campfire hospitality at Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing, where finishers gather for stories and a complimentary meal. While the event is timed with prizes, the focus remains on personal challenge rather than pure competition. The combination of technical terrain, stunning Appalachian views, and genuine community feel has earned it recognition as a standout gravel event in the Mid-Atlantic region.
