About This Event

Named after Matilda of Canossa, the medieval noblewoman who ruled this region, Gran Fondo Matildica stands as one of Italy’s most challenging and scenic cycling events. This UCI Grand Fondo World Series qualifier takes place in the rolling hills of Emilia-Romagna, offering multiple route options that cater to different ambition levels.

The event presents four distance options ranging from a manageable 48km route up to the flagship 160km challenge featuring over 3,000 meters of climbing. Starting from Reggio Emilia, the routes wind through the region’s characteristic landscape of medieval hilltop towns, vineyards, and agricultural valleys. The longer routes demand serious climbing legs, with sustained ascents that test even experienced riders.

What sets this gran fondo apart is its authentic Italian character. Rest stops showcase the region’s culinary heritage with handmade pasta, local cured meats, and aged Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese – fuel that transforms aid stations into cultural experiences rather than mere pit stops. The atmosphere strikes a balance between competitive intensity and celebratory camaraderie typical of Italian cycling events.

The timing in late spring provides ideal riding conditions with warm, sunny weather that highlights the countryside’s natural beauty. Riders pass through sunflower fields and vineyard-dotted hills while tackling terrain that rewards both climbing ability and pacing strategy. The event attracts an international field of amateur and professional cyclists drawn by both the challenging course profile and the opportunity to race in one of cycling’s most storied regions.
