Nordic Skiers along trail in Tour of Anchorage with mountain range in background
Last updated August 9, 2024--

If you're a Nordic skiing enthusiast looking for a race that offers both challenge and unique scenery, the Tour of Anchorage is an event you can't afford to miss. Held annually in the heart of Alaska's largest city, Anchorage. The Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage (NSAA) organizes this event every year and is a Birkebeiner Qualifier. This cross-country ski marathon is one of the few point-to-point events of its kind in North America—and it might be the only one that takes you through an urban environment! Strambecco rates Tour of Anchorage as one of the Best Nordic Ski Races in the Northwest.

Event & Course Info

The Tour of Anchorage offers three ski distances—25K, 40K, and 50K—catered to both Freestyle and Classic techniques, allowing participants to choose the challenge that best suits their skills and goals. What makes this race truly stand out is its course, which winds through Anchorage's extensive network of ski and multi-use trails. You'll glide along snow-covered paths, cross tunnels, and navigate bridges, all while surrounded by the urban landscape of Anchorage. It’s a unique blend of natural beauty and cityscape that only this event can offer. And if you're into fat-biking, you're in luck—there are bike races held on the same course, making this event a celebration of winter sports in all forms.

The Tour of Anchorage offers a course profile that is as varied as it is scenic. The 40K and 50K races start on the Anchorage Hillside, an area known for its rolling terrain and stunning views. From there, skiers traverse the city, making their way through greenbelts and along multi-use trails that highlight the best of Anchorage's outdoor offerings. The 25K race, which starts at Alaska Pacific University in Midtown, ties into the longer routes and shares the same finish line at Kincaid Park, a beautiful area on the western edge of the city overlooking Cook Inlet.

The 50K route is the longest and most challenging option, featuring significant elevation gain and diverse terrain. Expect to encounter everything from gentle slopes to steep climbs, with an overall elevation gain that will test even the most seasoned skiers. The 40K route offers a slightly shorter but still demanding journey, with similar terrain and elevation challenges. The 25K course is perfect for those looking for a shorter but still rewarding race, with less elevation gain but plenty of opportunities to enjoy the trail system. Aid stations are strategically placed along each route, providing essential hydration and quick snacks to keep you fueled throughout the race. These stations also serve as safety checkpoints, ensuring that all participants are accounted for. Spectators can gather at these locations, offering much-needed encouragement as skiers push toward the finish.

The Tour of Anchorage prides itself on being inclusive and accessible, with no official cutoff time for completion. The finish line will remain open until 7:00 PM, allowing participants plenty of time to complete their chosen distance. However, it’s important to note that if you’re still skiing after the last aid station at Pt. Woronoff past 5:30 PM, you might find yourself finishing in the dark. The race day experience doesn't end at the finish line. Awards are a big part of the celebration, with the top three women and men in each category receiving recognition. Those brave souls who take on both skiing and biking are entered in a special category available for awards. The festivities continue with finish line celebrations at Kincaid Park.

So, whether you’re a seasoned Nordic skier or a newcomer looking for your next big challenge, the Tour of Anchorage offers a unique experience that combines the thrill of competition with the beauty of Alaska’s winter landscape. Get ready to ski, bike, and celebrate in one of the most remarkable events in the Nordic skiing calendar.
