About This Event

The Icebug Birkie Trail Run transforms the legendary American Birkebeiner ski course into a challenging trail running experience through northwest Wisconsin’s glacial terrain. This event stands out for its unique course composition—80% wide ski trails and 20% technical singletrack—creating a distinctive mix that few trail runs can match.

The course’s glacial topography defines the challenge. Expect relentless short, steep climbs up to 50 feet with grades hitting 10-20%, followed by quick descents that test your quads and technique. The wide ski trails, mostly grass-covered with some dirt sections, contrast sharply with the winding singletrack portions featuring tight switchbacks, rocks, and roots.

Race options span from a 5K introduction to the full USATF Mountain Ultra Trail Marathon Championship, which draws top national competitors. The marathon course climbs to Mt. Telemark’s summit, offering panoramic views that veteran participants consistently highlight as a race highlight. Half marathon runners tackle 13.1 miles of the same varied terrain, while the marathon relay allows teams of 3 or 6 to tackle the full distance together.

The event maintains strong community roots through the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation, connecting trail runners to the historic Birkebeiner legacy. Aid stations are strategically placed throughout longer courses, and the post-race atmosphere includes complimentary Earth Rider beer and celebration at the finish.

Prize money rewards top marathon finishers, while age group awards recognize performances across all distances. The Friday night Trail Running Film Festival adds an inspiring prelude to race weekend, building anticipation for your own Birkie Trail adventure.

Signature Events

  1. American Birkebeiner (Birkie)
The American Birkebeiner, often called “The Birkie,” is ABSF’s flagship event and North America’s largest cross-country ski race. Covering 50K for skate skiers and 55K for classic skiers, the race traverses the challenging terrain of northern Wisconsin, from Cable to Hayward. Inspired by a historic Norwegian race of the same name, the Birkie draws thousands of skiers worldwide, making it a bucket-list race for Nordic skiing enthusiasts. The event includes a full festival weekend with additional races, events, and community celebrations.

    1. Kortelopet
Held during Birkie Week, the Kortelopet is a 29K race that provides skiers a shorter, yet still challenging, distance. Starting near Cable and finishing in Hayward, the “Korte” is ideal for intermediate skiers or those not yet ready for the full Birkie course. This race shares the same supportive, spirited atmosphere and draws a large crowd of skiers, from competitive racers to recreational participants.
    2. Prince Haakon
Named after the legendary Norwegian prince, the Prince Haakon is a 15K ski race designed for beginners, families, and those new to Nordic skiing. Taking place on portions of the Birkie Trail, this race provides an accessible and enjoyable entry point into the world of cross-country skiing, capturing the thrill of the larger Birkie events in a more relaxed format.
  2. Fat Bike Birkie
Expanding its reach beyond skiing, the ABSF hosts the Fat Bike Birkie, the largest and most prominent fat-tire bike race in the country. On the snow-packed Birkie Trail, this event offers 47K and 21K race options, allowing cyclists to test their endurance and handling skills on winter trails. The Fat Bike Birkie draws competitive and recreational riders alike and has helped establish fat biking as a popular winter sport in the region.
  3. Birkie Trail Run Festival
The Birkie Trail Run Festival is a fall event offering a range of running distances, from a half marathon to a 100K ultra marathon. Set on the scenic Birkie Trail, the festival attracts trail runners from across the country who appreciate the technical, varied terrain of the Northwoods. With options for all skill levels, the festival celebrates trail running and the changing fall landscape, making it a popular event among outdoor enthusiasts.

The ABSF continues to promote healthy, active lifestyles and provide world-class trails for year-round recreation. Its events encourage people to get outdoors, challenge themselves, and be part of a vibrant, supportive community.
