Shenandoah Mountain 100 2026
About This Event
Set against the stunning backdrop of Virginia’s George Washington National Forest, the Shenandoah Mountain 100 stands as the most popular event in the National Ultra Endurance Race Series. Running since 1998, this ultra-endurance mountain bike race near Stokesville has built a reputation for delivering both breathtaking scenery and relentless challenge.
Registration caps at 650 participants to minimize forest impact and maintain an intimate atmosphere. Riders choose between two demanding options: the 100-kilometer race on Saturday with over 8,400 feet of climbing, or the full 100-mile backcountry loop on Sunday featuring a massive 13,600+ feet of elevation gain. Both courses weave through scenic singletrack, rugged doubletrack, fire roads, and brief pavement sections.
The event’s remote backcountry setting means no spectator following, but strategically placed aid stations approximately every 20 miles stock essentials like water, HEED, Hammer Gel, and Coke. The drop bag system allows riders to pre-position gear and nutrition at aid stations—everything must fit in provided 1-gallon ziplock bags. The 100K allows two drop bags while the 100-miler permits three.
Cash payouts up to $500 reward top male and female finishers, with prizes extending five deep in all categories. The limited participant cap and challenging course create an exclusive, competitive atmosphere that draws serious endurance athletes from across the country. Friends and family can volunteer at aid stations, adding to the supportive community vibe that defines this classic Virginia mountain bike adventure.
